The number 3 seed in the South Region
Stanford defeated # 14 seed Cornell 77-53 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cornell was looking to give the Ivy league its first win in the NCAA Tournament since 1998. It looked like Cornell could have a chance at being a Cinderella in the tournament after going 14-0 in the Ivy league while scoring 77.1 points per game, however Stanford limited Cornell to just 30% shooting in the game. Ivy League player of the year Louis Dale did all he could leading the team with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in the loss.
For Stanford the win breaks a streak of first round defeats the last two years during March Madness. Junior guard Kenny Brown scored a team high 18 for Stanford in the win, sophmore center Robin Lopez added 14 points.
Number 3 seeded Stanford (26-7) moves on to the second round of the South Region in the NCAA Tournament where they will face the # 6 seed Marquette (24-9) on Saturday. Marquette defeated Kentucky, overcoming a huge game from Kentucky senior Joe Crawford with a balanced scoring attack.
