March Madness 2010 Bracket Risers: Wisconsin Badgers

The Wisconsin Badgers are looking at a higher March Madness 2010 bracket seed than anyone thought coming into this year. The Badgers started out the 2010 season out of all of the polls and picked by the Big Ten coaches to finish in seventh place in the Big Ten, in fact most of the pre-season magazines picked them not to be playing during March Madness for the first time in a decade. It seems hard to believe this was the prediction as the Badgers are now up to 16th in both polls and fresh off destroying the Michigan State Spartans at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Spartans of course were undefeated at the time and up to 5th in the polls, and while a loss in Madison could be reasonably assured for the Spartans nobody thought they would receive an 18 point beat down. Yes it is true that the Spartans lost their top player junior guard Kalin Lucas halfway through the second half, however the Spartans were getting soundly defeated from the tipoff to the point of injury and beyond.

So how are the Badgers doing so well this year with their star player Jon Leuer out for an extended period of time with a wrist injury? A lot of people will say the Badgers don't have talent and win with a home court advantage and a great "system" from coach Bo Ryan, the truth is different they do it with talented basketball players. This is not a team you want your team to face during March Madness as they are at the top of the nation in committing the least amount of turnovers and team defense, in addition this is the kicker they have 6 or 7 players who can beat you for 20 points without forcing up shots. In the Michigan State game the Badgers second best player senior guard Trevon Hughes was out in the first half with very early foul trouble and the other two guards Jason Bohannon and the emerging Jordan Taylor picked up the slack and then some. The Badgers have also gotten big contributions from Keaton Nankivil a junior big man who can step outside and stroke it,Rob Wilson and sophomore wing player who is just coming into his own, and Ryan Evans a redshirt freshman who plays strong defense. The defeat of the Spartans makes the Badgers the only team besides Syracuse to already have knocked off 3 top five teams this year as they have also beaten Duke and Purdue. In addition the Badgers in the previuse game against Purdue had a chance on the final possesion to win a road game against a top 6 team, so they can play on the road.

It looks like the Badgers are actually just starting to peak as Rob Wilson is becoming a bigger factor and Leuer is supposedly getting better and will return soon, so we expect the Badgers to beat some teams up pretty badly the rest of the Big Ten schedule as they are done playing the premiere teams. Are current prediction is that the Badgers March Madness 2010 Bracket position will be a 3 seed, playing away from home. Don't get fooled and get excited if you see this team in your region, you don't want to face a team with multiple scoring options that plays great defense.

  1. It is finally good to see someone recognize the talent of the Wisconsin team. It is so disrepectful to these young men who have clearly demonstrated their ability on the court and their character off the court, to be marginalized by sports pundits.
